80216:
Denver’s own Flint

North Denver’s Globeville and Elyria-Swansea community was recently identified as the most polluted zip code in the country. Individuals in the community, predominantly Latino and working class, live among multiple sources of pollution, including a pet food factory, two interstate highways, and Superfund sites. They also live near Suncor oil refinery, which has a long history of permit violations and accidents.

Not surprisingly, this area has some of the nation’s highest rates of asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity—all diseases linked to pollution.

We followed residents of this community over the course of about a year to produce this mini-doc about the neighborhood, in hopes that we may be able to secure funding to develop a full docu-series.
